Smit steers Puma to grand victory – 21 April 2018

Christopher Smit debuts for the Pumas

On a great day for the Pumas' debutants, firstly their new sponsor on their chest, iCOLLEGE, and flyhalf Christopher Smit, they started their SuperSport Challenge campaign with a 36-18 victory over the Blue Bulls at the Nelspruit Rugby Club on Saturday.

Smith had a dream debut for his new team, scoring 21 points on debut with a perfect kicking display which included five penalties and the conversion of all three tries.

The teams were slow out of the blocks and it was the Bulls who scored the first try as they worked an overlap on the right flank for winger Xolisa Guma to dot down.

Puma flyer JP Lewis equaled matters soon after with clever play on the blind-side and Smit converted for his first points in a Puma jersey.

Bulls fullback Earl Dowrie, who impressed on the day, soon afterwards scored an easy try as Embrose Papier worked him into space after a scrum.

Pumas scrumhalf Stefan Ungerer then crossed the try-line with guts and strength and with Smit's second conversion they enjoyed a narrow lead.

Then Dowrie and Smith exchanged two penalty goals each before half-time with the teams changing the lead every time.

Smith scored the first points after play resumed with put the Pumas five points clear with the score on 23-18.

Devon Williams dotted down after a sweeping move for the best “try” of the game but referee Jaco Pretorius called the Pumas back for a scrum on the halfway line.

But two penalty goals by Smith gave the Pumas an unassailable lead and with the score on 29-18 they had the victory in the bag.

A late try by the hard-working Puma flanker Nardus van der Walt was the last scoring action for the home-side to get their season off on a winning start.

Scorers:
iCOLLEGE Pumas: Tries: Stefan Ungerer, JP Lewis, Nardus van der Walt. Conversions: Christopher Smit (3). Penalties: Smit (5).

Blue Bulls: Tries: Xolisa Guma. Earl Dowrie. Conversion: Douwrie. Penalties: Dowrie (2).

The Boogey Man, Warrick Gelant, was instrumental in the Blue Bulls turning the tides on the Pumas at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night with the Bulls scoring eight tries to four in their 52-32 victory.
Gelant scored only one of the tries but he stepped and weaver his way past numerous defenders to keep the Pumas defense guessing.
He had a perfect partner in late replacement Travis Ismaiel who showed just how a dangerous runner he is.
The Pumas, outgunned by the Bulls three-quarters, never raised the white flag and tried right to the end.
They had the upper hand in the scrums for most of the game and their forwards never took a step back.
Gelant made a strong challenge for Springbok colours once again and is the top try-scorer in the Currie Cup.
Captain Burger Odendaal again impressed in midfield with Johnny Kotzé the only back not to trouble the scorers.
Jannie Stander, Willie Engelbrecht, Selom Gavor and Frankie Herne earned the Pumas a bonus point for four tries.
Scorers:
Pumas: Tries: Jannie Stander, Willie Engelbrecht, Selom Gavor and Frankie Herne. Conversions: Kobus Marais (3). Penalties: Marais (2).

Steval Pumas coach Brent Janse van Rensburg has played his biggest trump card by including flanker Chris Cloete in his starting line-up for Friday night’s Currie Cup fixture against the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.
It will be Cloete’s last fixture before joining Irish club Munster at the completion of the domestic season who will start as open side flanker and with injuries to Brian Shabangu and Thembelani Bholi the timing couldn’t be better.
Janse van Rensburg had to replace Bholi, Shabangu, lock Stefan Willemse and fullback Justin van Staden for the final fling of the season.
Cloete and Nardus van der Walt will start on the side of the scrum, Jannie Stander will fill Willemse’s boots and Gerrit Smith moves from midfield to fullback.
In two other positional switches Trompie Pretorius moves to outside centre with Selom Gavor getting a starting opportunity on the wing.
Winger Gerrie Labuschagne gets his first opportunity in the match day 22.

The Steval Pumas squandered a healthy 28-10 lead in the last fixture in the Mbombela stadium on Saturday to forfeit a possible semi-final spot in this season’s Currie Cup competition.
The Tafel Lager Griquas narrowly won the match 38-35 to end the Pumas’ Cup dream and lifted themselves off the foot of the congested Currie Cup log.
It was the proverbial match of two halves with the Pumas controlling the first stanza during which they scored a bonus point try with number eight Willie Engelbrecht particularly impressive.
The shoe was on the Peacock Blues’ foot in the second half with their impressive centre Tertius Kruger leading the fightback with a brace of tries of his own.
Kruger also started the Griquas fightback in the second half followed by an intercept try to the flying Kyle Steyn which signaled the beginning of the end for the home side.
It didn’t help matters for the Mpumalanga team that their advantage in the scrums was taken away with uncontested scrums.
It was Griquas’ turn to score four tries in the second forty which included Kruger’s final nail in the Pumas coffin.
Scorers:
Pumas: Tries: Willie Engelbrecht (2), Hennie Skorbinski, Marko Janse van Rensburg, Frankie Herne. Conversions: Kobus Marais (5).
Griquas: Tries: Tertius Kruger (2), Wendal Wehr, Kyle Steyn, Ederies Arendse. Conversions: George Whitehead (4), André Swarts. Penalty: Whitehead.

After a much-needed rest the Steval Pumas have made only a single change to their side to meet the Tafel lager Griquas at Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
Hooker Marko Janse van Rensburg regains his place in the Starting XV with Frankie Herne being moved to the bench once again.
Many of the first-choice players were in much need of both physical and emotional rest which was evident in the Cheetahs game.
Flanker Francois Kleinhans has also been recalled after a few weeks rest and with little game time recently, will start from the bench.
The Pumas are in a catch 22 position, the can still qualify for the play-offs if they win both the remaining fixtures with bonus points, or if they lose both, will finish with the wooden spoon.
The fine balance of their kicking game, their attack and defence deserted them against the Cheetahs and it proved costly.
They have beaten the Griquas away from home in Round One and have to regain that form.

The Pumas squandered a golden opportunity to record the best Premier Currie Cup season ever when they narrowly went down 33-32 to the Free State Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Friday afternoon.
A fifth Currie Cup victory would have been the Pumas’ best result in South Africa’s premier domestic competition and at times it seemed that it was a forgone conclusion.
To be fair, they have had many opportunities to beat the Free State, but their efforts was not accurate enough against opponents they should have put away easily.
Two late tries by Free States flyhalf Robbie Petzer and some elusive running by fullback Clayton Blommetjies was too good for the Pumas defenders.
There were many positive signs during the match which they controlled for almost an hour, a maul try by Frankie Herne, a fine try by the hard-running winger Trompie Pretorius, a try to Willie Engelbrecht after fine inter-play with the other loose-forwards and a try by Justin van Staden which should have been the coup-de-grace.
A dropped pass by Van Staden and a foot into touch by flanker Brian Shabangu, who made up in the second half by some spirited play, eventually cost the Pumas a place into the history book, and a possible place in the competition.

Scorers:
Pumas: Tries: Frankie Herne, Trompie Pretorius, Willie Engelbrecht, Justin van Staden. Conversions: Kobus Marais (3). Penalties: Marais (2).
Free State: Tries: Robbie Petzer (2), Zee Makhabela, Cecil Afrika, Reinach Venter. Conversions: Petzer (4).

Last year’s Pumas Player of the Year, hooker Frankie Herne, gets a well-deserved opportunity to start against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Friday night after starting from the bench in each of their previous nine Currie Cup fixtures.
Herne acted as Marko Janse van Rensburg and Mark Pretorius’ understudy so far in this campaign but gets his opportunity with Pretorius off with a hamstring injury.
Flanker Lambert Groenewald also had to be replaced due to a shoulder injury. Brian Shabangu, who started from the bench recently, has also been called up to the starting line-up.
Herne has scored three tries from the bench this season and is a vital cog in the side’s driving mauls.
Their top try-scorers in the competition are Mark Pretorius, Khwezi Mona, Trompie Pretorius and Ruwellyn Isbell on four each.
Flanker Francois Kleynhans has also been named on the bench after recovering from a head injury.
The backs however, remains unchanged.

The Pumas turned back the clock 34 years, when they defeated Western Province 22-12 in a Currie Cup game, in the Mbombela stadium on Friday night.
The Pumas, then names South Eastern Transvaal, scored their most famous win against a star-studded WP in a Lion Cup fixture back in 1983.
The Pumas added the Western Province scalp to that of the Lions and the Blue Bulls on their home turf with the spirited display which gave their Currie Cup hopes a massive boost.
Their little general Stefan Ungerer gave another sterling display at scrumhalf in the pink jersey and he must now be one of the top number nines in the country.
The Pumas’ shopping spree must be complimented with players like Ungerer, Tembelani Bholi, Stefan Willemse, Pieter Scholtz and Gerrit Smith turning their season around.

Scorers:
Pumas: Tries - Kobus Marais, Frank Herne, Jerome Pretorius. Penalties: Kobus Marias (1) Conversion: Kobus Marais (2)
