In the final group game of the SuperSport Challenge, the Steval Pumas took the field against the Hino Valke, hoping to secure a 3rd place finish on the log.

The opening minutes proved to be a ding-dong affair, with both teams showing a willingness to take the ball through multiple phases, and giving it some air, before the Hino Valke’s Anrich Richter crashed over for the first try on 7 minutes.
Christian Richter converted, 0-7.

The Steval Pumas launched wave after wave of attack from the restart and 8 minutes later, Francois Kleinhans scored under the posts for the home team. Sias Ebersohn converted, 7-7.

Scrappy play from the Hino Valke on the restart allowed the Steval Pumas to score their second shortly afterwards, with captain Hennie Skorbinski crossing the whitewash in the 20th minute.
Ebersohn was again on target with the conversion, 14-7.
Play continued, with no quarter asked, or given, until Emile Temperman scored for the Steval Pumas 12 minutes later. Ebersohn slotted, 21-7.

The Hino Valke got the better of the ensuing minutes of end-to-end action, allowing Christian Rust to convert his own try, 21-14.

The Steval Pumas launched a sustained attack on the Hino Valke line, and several minutes after the half-time hooter sounded, were awarded a penalty try.

Half-time, 28-14.

The Hino Valke started the second half on the front foot, scoring inside of the first 5 minutes via Dwight Pansegrouw. Christian Rust converted, 28-21.

This did not sit well with the Steval Puma hooker, and Frank Herne scored for the home-team 3 minutes later. The conversion sailed wide, 33-21.

The Steval Pumas refused to back down, and extended their lead 7 minutes later when Ryan Nell scored a try, converted by Justin Van Staden, 40-21.

The Hino Valke had a couple of surprises of their own up their sleeves, and on 69minutes, Christian Rust scored his second, 40-26.

Ruwellyn Isbell decided to light the afterburners and scored a try following a scintillating side-line run.
Justin van Staden converted from the sideline, 47-26.

A converted intercept-try on the stroke of full-time allowed the Valke to take the score-line to 47-33.
Steval Pumas coach Brent Janse van Rensburg said the mentality at the moment is just not calm enough. “There are a lot of positives that one can take out of the game but we need to be more clinical and our error rate is unfortunately too high. There were moments of brilliance in the match. We showed great intensity, great physicality, sometimes really good in the set piece.”
However, there were too many soft moments he said.
“Again throwing balls on the deck, aimless passes. We had try scoring opportunities that we are coughing up every time. We just aren’t patient with the ball in hand. We don’t execute. The Falcons scored a number of tries due to our errors. The players really have to start realizing that patience with the ball in hand is absolutely vital,” said Janse van Rensburg.
